Revamping Tutorial

This is, once again, a tutorial for GIMP. You'll still get the general idea though of what to do if you're using MS Paint or whatever.

A revamp is when you take an old sprite, like lets say the R/B/Y and G/S/C series of sprites, and make them look like they were made for the D/P series.

I'll show you an example...

See how they are in the same pose? The one on the right was made off of the one on the left. It's revamped.

Revamping Tutorial

So, to start off, get a R/B/Y or G/S/C sprite. I'm going to use the Sandslash gold sprite for this tutorial. I'll post it here just to show you it before we get into the good stuff...

How do are you going to revamp that you say? Well, there are some steps to go through.

Getting Ready

Yeah, the very first thing you do is... Get ready. So, to do this, um... K, just take the sprite you're revamping and paste it into a canvas. I'd make the working image about 200x200 just so you have more than enough room.

Also, you'll want to paste the D/P sprite in there with it, for color and for a guide. So, as you know me from the recoloring tutorial, I like to make color templates. So, make a color template for both the R/B/Y sprite and the D/P sprite. You should know how to do this, again, from the recoloring tutorial.

Outline

So now we know what we're dealing with... One of the sprites (the one we're revamping) has 4 shades. The D/P sprite has 14. I don't know if you notice this, but revamps are basically scratches that have a pre-made outline. So... Where do you get this outline? You're going to find it.

I make outlines with random colors, preferably ones that aren't too dark or light. I'll use a blue for this tutorial's outline.

Now... Start by taking your outline color, and pick a part to start with. I'm going to start the outline off with the head. So, start overlapping the outline of the head (or whatever part you're starting with), and continue going over the outline of your part until it's finished. Sometimes the outline of something might not be very clear, but just try your best. Check out how it looks now. Yeah, weird.

After doing one part's outline, move on to some other part until you finish the entire outline. I used a shade of orange to identify the eyes by the way. Here's what mine looks like after I did all of that.

Basic Colors

After getting the outline, remove everything from the R/B/Y or G/S/C sprite except the outline that you just made. You should now have something like this.

Now do you see what I meant when I said that revamps are like scratches with a pre-made outline? I hope you do!

The next thing to do is add some basic colors. Just fill in the areas with a main shade of the color that the area should be (use the colors from the D/P template...). This is a simple part. =]

Even though the main problem is the lack of shade, another problem is the outline... Just look at that blue! Eew! So, as you can image, I'm going to fix up the outline. Color it with the darkest shade that you have for a certain color, other than black. Obviously, use the right colors in the right areas. Also, take the time to edit the outline and change some stuff up at this point if it doesn't seem to flow. I fixed up the eyes and the spikes on the top of Sandslash's head.

Shading

The final and most important part is shading. This makes a sprite look 3D, and not flat. This can be the hardest part of a revamp, as you're basically on your own with this part.

I can't really guide you through with shading, I can only give you tips. Try to use the D/P sprite as a guide, but keep in mind that the 2 sprites are in different poses. Don't forget to shade the outline aswell! Just try to put darker shades in the areas that light wouldn't touch as much, and keep one light resource. And... Put lighter shades in the areas that light will touch more. =P

And... I'm done! Check it out!

Finishing

So that's it! You have now done a revamp.

Here's what the finished product looks like:
